Pancake day festival

Rytojus prasidejo vakar: History is now - Tomorrow started yesterday…
...is a unique documentary photographic project started in March 2004 with members of the rural communities of Zagare; an ancient historical town near the northern border with Latvia, and the farming villages of Pocuineliai and Skemiai, in the south of Siauliai district, Lithuania.
Rolls of film, disposable cameras and point and shoot cameras were generously donated by shops and individuals in Cumbria. Folly Arts Centre in Lancaster also donated film. The main aims of the project were to preserve a visual record of the traditional way of life before it changes for ever andto raise the profile of the problems of rural people in the face of the rapid social and economic change overtaking their communities at the present time.
Over 1,000 photographs were taken using film donated by shops and individuals in Britain. The variety of images of all aspects of life, reflects the range of the authors of the photographs - the youngest was seven and the oldest was over seventy. The work was exhibited in the city of Siauliai for five weeks over the period of accession and the project has taken part in the international photographic festival, 'Kaunas Photo Days' recently. The work was shown in Britain January / February 2005. The project has continued year on year and exhibitions have taken place in venues in Lithuania and Latvia and also at the Brewery, Kendal, in 2006/2007. Information about further activities of the project and related projects can be found on
www.rytojus.com

Wendy Rowe, committee member of Film Club at the ROXY, is the organiser and curator of the projects.
